How to Avoid Costly Paving Sealing Mistakes

Choosing the wrong sealer is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make with paving. A cheap topical or acrylic sealer might look fine for a few months, then turn patchy, yellow, peel or trap moisture — leaving you with ruined paving and the cost of stripping it back and starting again.

These are the failures we're called out to fix again and again — nearly always caused by the wrong sealer, or a topical sealer that sits on top of the surface instead of soaking into it:

• Acid & salt damage. Harsh cleaning acids such as hydrochloric (muriatic) acid, and salt attack, eat into unprotected or poorly sealed surfaces.
• Patchy, faded & yellowing. Many topical sealers discolour and yellow under UV, leaving an uneven, aged-looking finish.
• Popping & delaminating. Film-forming sealers lose their bond over time and lift, flake and peel away from the surface.
• Moisture lock. A non-breathable sealer traps moisture beneath the surface, giving pavers a cloudy, ugly appearance.
• The wrong sealer on the wrong surface. Using an unsuitable sealer — for example on clay pavers — leads to premature, costly failure.
